The power of rights

After its serious defeat and loss of territory in 1994, Azerbaijan adopted a clear guideline of putting the notion of right to territorial integrity in the basis of its foreign policy. And it was not accidentally that during all international meetings, Azerbaijani leader discussed the issue of Armenia's "usurpation" of 20% of its territory, and "collected" public assurances from the leaders of various countries recognizing the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and widely disseminated them through the press and diplomatic channels.

It was a policy aimed at recognizing Azerbaijan’s right internationally. Holding the right and arming his country, the Azerbaijani leader waited for a favorable moment of geopolitical opportunity, which came in the fall of 2020 and led to the 44-day war. Here we should also notice the gross mistakes of the incumbent leadership of Armenia at that time. Declaring before the war that he "negotiates whatever he wants", Pashinyan took full responsibility for further developments.

The results are obvious today, and it is in vain that he tries to shift the burden of responsibility from himself or to blame his "formers" for failures and anyone else except himself. But we do not intend to delve into the mistakes made by the past and present in the field of foreign policy, which we have referred to several times. Of course, it would be correct if the former authorities recognized Artsakh's right to self-determination, relying on international law and, first of all, the precedent of Kosovo and the decision of the UN court. Azerbaijan, however, was able not only to keep, but also to exercise its right to start a war, and what happened happened.

All this was necessary to understand the logic of today's politics in Azerbaijan. The latter is trying to deprive Armenia of the right, the power of which it was convinced by its own experience; therefore Azerbaijan is in a hurry to extract from Armenia a document in which Armenia renounces Artsakh and provides a corridor beyond its control, which should become the land route for the unification of the Turkic world.

They distinctly understand in Azerbaijan that the international order is in a deteriorated state, and in the near future the rules of the new world order will be established, the situation may change not in favor of Azerbaijan, for which it is necessary to get that signature for the so-called Peace Treaty, as it is implied, right now, taking into account the window of opportunity opened for Azerbaijan. And, it seems, the incumbent government of the Republic of Armenia is going to make its second fatal mistake: to sign such a document.

At this moment, by any means, Armenia should avoid signing such a document, otherwise the mistake could be fatal for Armenia. Time is not working in favor of Azerbaijan, and there is a high probability that new developments will begin in the world from spring, which is a separate topic of conversation.
