Politics without responsibility

The studies conducted by cultural critics and economic theorists reveal that progress and prosperity are achieved in those countries where there are cherished traditions and unwritten laws. It is truism to say  that written laws are not sufficient to build a law-abiding and developing society.

According to those theories, high level of mutual trust and establishment of responsibility as an institution are important characteristics of the society. In many countries, a verbal agreement can be legally binding for the success of business deals and various transactions, even if reached without witnesses. The existence of mutual trust and responsibility as public institutions guarantee the establishment of such societies, and cheating in politics and public life, misleading people and concealing the truth are severely punished, even without the use of legal mechanisms. People engaged in the mentioned are quickly pushed backwards, losing respect and the confidence to take on any role in public and political life. Slipping once becomes fatal for them.

Now back to our reality, no sociological survey was conducted on the level of mutual trust in Armenia. Even if it were, we are sure that the mutual trust rate would be extremely low. We do not trust each other, cheating, lying, misleading people are commonplace. We see the same thing almost every day in our daily lives. There are so many examples that it makes no sense to refer to them. The members of the current government, starting with the leaders, have fabricated so many lies during these three years, they have misled and manipulated the society so much that all that is needed is to read the daily press and make sure of it. The lies and manipulative behavior of the Prime Minister himself are the subject of separate coverage. A person who distorts even official statistics in a convenient way.

It is symbolic that the public occasion of the "revolution" of 2018 was Serzh Sargsyan's cheating. He promised not to be the leader of the country after the amendment to the Constitution, but later deceived the public, ran for the post of Prime Minister and was elected. Or, the leader of the second parliamentary force, who, inspiring people with vain hopes, took them to the streets, then promised to "beat" in the special elections to the National Assembly, but was satisfied with 21% of votes. In fact, the word turned out to be a lie, failing to keep his promise and for the second time he is unlikely to gain public trust.

Word is not an empty shot, it is a responsibility first and foremost. The lack of an institution of responsibility is the main problem of today's Armenia, without which we cannot succeed.
