Why did the President's concerns remain ignored?

On January 23, Armen Sarkissian, President of the Republic of Armenia, resigned (we do not say former President, as the deadline for withdrawing his resignation has not expired yet - ed.). In any country, such a resignation would cause an internal political crisis, or at least initiate serious discussions. Moreover, Sarkissian conditioned his resignation on a number of political circumstances, which he pointed out in a rather extensive statement of resignation. The text uses expressions such as "national crisis," "the head of state and sometimes even his family become targets," and “No longer do we have the right to make mistakes! " and so on. The statement also emphasizes that the institution of the President is only a ritual and has no leverage to influence the situation.

In an interview with Sky News Arabia TV Company a few days before his resignation, Sarkissian also expressed a number of concerns, he particularly said that Armenia and Turkey had once tried to negotiate in October 2009 and even a protocol was signed in Zurich. "I was skeptical at the time as well for several reasons. One of them was that Azerbaijan was absent from the talks on the Turkish side. Armenia had problems with Azerbaijan and would not have reached an agreement with Turkey without Azerbaijan. The Diaspora was also absent on the Armenian side. The Armenian Diaspora was mostly formed because of the Genocide. "How could any president or prime minister of Armenia sign an agreement without the support of the Diaspora?" - he asked.

According to the President of Armenia, without taking into account the point of view of the Diaspora, it is impossible to discuss any issue related to the Genocide with Turkey and achieve success. And he says this in the context of the newly launched Armenian-Turkish talks, which implies that the issue of the Armenian Genocide will be discussed without involving the Diaspora. In other words, it is obvious that the issue of the Genocide is included in the agenda of the current negotiations between Armenia and Turkey, no matter how much the representatives of the ruling political force bypass that topic. Instead, as is typical of Armenian political "thought", conversations about the president, the family and the personal life became the focus of public observations and discussions.

Armen Sarkissian, in fact, made a political statement, raising a number of issues of broad public concern. It would have been logical if these issues had been substantively discussed in the socio-political and expert circles, but nothing of the kind happened. Instead, as it is typical of Armenian political "thought", conversations about the president, the family and the personal life became the focus of public observations and discussions.

Hetq online devoted its journalistic investigation to the "dark" pages of Armen Sarkissian 's biography, revealing that he is a citizen of another country and that his election as President of the Republic of Armenia in 2018 was illegal. According to the newspaper, if the latter had not resigned and returned to Great Britain, he would have had to stand trial.

We do not argue. It is possible that this is correct information, it is possible that Sarkissian really resigned to avoid responsibility. It is also possible that this information was passed to Hetq online now, rather than earlier, and that the transmitters want to solve a political issue through it. These are questions that we do not have answers to. But irrespective of everything, if the President used his concerns to give political nature to his refusal, and if Hetq online's information is accurate, then even in that event we should take his statement rather seriously. All the mentioned circumstances cannot be an excuse to ignore the alarms and warnings reflected in the announcement.

Many accusations have been made against Armen Sarkissian, but no one has accused him of being stupid or uneducated. At least his ability to justify his resignation allows him to present the painful issues properly. It only remains to bring the perception of our expert thought to the level of adequate comprehension of what is presented.
