Russia's recognition of Donbass independence is an action with far-reaching geopolitical implications, and the problem is not only Ukraine. It is a process that calls into question the world order created after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The United States is no longer the only superpower and can no longer afford to be “the only policeman" in the world. The geopolitical role of China and Russia is growing. The events in Ukraine only accelerated the need for new world order.
The recognition of Donbass was a big blow to the credit of the United States and, for example, to other countries, which now have to go to different addresses at the same time to solve their security issues. The world is becoming multi-vector or, to be more precise, three-polar. This means that a new world order must be formed, for which the three poles - the United States, China and Russia - must sit at the table and come to an agreement to form a new security system. Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France has recently clearly defined the situation, stating, “There are no longer any rules for stability and security in Europe today.” It can be added that there is no security system in the whole world, either. Were it not for nuclear countries and the threat of nuclear war, a new world war would have started. However, there are nuclear weapons and the superpowers have only one thing left to do - to come to a new agreement.
We cannot but touch upon another issue, which directly concerns Armenia as well. There are extracts in the Russian President's "address to the nation" on the recognition of Donbas by Russia, which are interesting in terms of understanding Putin's worldview perceptions, as well as the conceptual political mistakes of Ukraine.
According to Putin, Ukraine was created after the Russian Revolution, thanks to the theses of Lenin's national policy. In other words, Soviet Socialist Republics were formed, during which the borders of Republics, including modern Ukraine, were drawn, which were later recognized by the international community. Occupied territories from Poland, Romania and Slovakia were annexed to Ukraine after World War II. It was the trophy of the war-winning country, the Soviet Union.
Since independence, Ukraine has launched a state campaign against the Soviet legacy, destroying communist monuments, as well as statues of World War II commanders. It was the will and desire of the people of Ukraine, and no one could show them what was right and what was wrong for them. However, by delegitimizing the communist revolution and the Soviet era, in fact, the legitimacy of Ukraine's current borders is also being questioned. Putin hinted that if Ukraine does not recognize the Soviet past, then the issue of the legitimacy of the borders created at that time should also be discussed. This is the main problem facing Ukraine. By the way, the opposite policy is pursued in neighboring Belarus, whether it is, "gulags", repressions, imprisonment of people, etc. However, it is a story where there have been both the above-mentioned negative phenomena and achievements.
The case of Ukraine is also important for the former Soviet Republics. There are also moods of rejecting the past in Armenia. As another way of development, another option can be mentioned. Acknowledging mistakes does not imply fighting against the past, but rather learning from it and moving forward.
