Let’s record the hopeless reality in order to be able to forge ahead

It is time to assess the political, social and sociological results of the June 2021 snap parliamentary elections in Armenia. It is important to understand the new realities and to draw a thick line "under" the developments that have taken place so far.

First, the notions "New Armenia", "Revolution", "New Generation", "Vetting", etc. that shaped the regime change and were driving forces in 2018, fell into disuse. A "usual" situation is reigning at present, and  the struggle is waged not for some noble ideas, but for exercising the power in traditional ways: formation of one’s own groupings based on very specific parochial interests, and in political life - lies and falsifications, authoritarian political parties, etc. , i.e., everything existent until 2018 that we know well.

Second, we must state that since it is impossible to make an unbiased internal and external, nationwide assessment of the causes of the Armenians’ defeat in the 44-day Artsakh war at the moment, that issue is also postponed for an indefinite time to be resumed without speculations after the "incumbent" and the "former" authorities are gone down in history and an opportunity is created, if apparently is created, to find impartial answers. Thus far, it is clear to everyone that the Armenian people were unable to create an effective state and a morally healthy society.

Third, we once again have the government and the opposition in the parliament, each of which is fighting for its parochial group interests, leaving the slogan of "salvation of the country" in the past. At best, in the new parliament we will witness the same mutual accusations, meaningless lip service, and shadow agreements with the incumbent government. In other words, there is no hope for anything new at this juncture either.

Fourth, the rhetoric of external orientations has also exhausted itself. The "pure" pro-Western and "pure" pro-Russian formations with the lifespan of lightning bug, having collected symbolic votes during the elections, have already received the assessment of their marginal status in the form of percentages.

Thus, the two opposition factions in the National Assembly will regularly remind us of the gray past, and the ruling faction - a gloomy and unpromising present. Unfortunately, there is no faction in the parliament that promises a hopeful future, it still does not exist in "civil life" in the form of extra-parliamentary opposition.

This is the reality that we must understand and accept, whether we like it or not. We cannot escape from reality, because it is impossible. We just have to accept it in order to find ways to forge ahead.
