25 October

  • UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called on world leaders to listen to the needs of the people in light of the wave of protests across the world, TASS reported. The secretary general pointed out that while the causes of protests differ, there is a uniting element in all cases of civil unrest. "It is clear that there is a growing deficit in trust between people and political establishments, and rising threats to the social contract," he said.
  • CNN pointed that President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday that the US military would continue securing oil fields in Syria while also suggesting that America's onetime allies in the fight against ISIS, the Syrian Kurds, consider moving to the region that houses those oil fields, a move that would see them relocate from their traditional homelands to a desert area hundreds of miles away.
  • The inaugural "Forest Summit: Global Action and Armenia", co-organized by the Armenia Tree Project and the American University of Armenia Acopian Center for the Environment, took place in Yerevan from October 20 to 23, reported Civilnet. Globally, forests are critical in the fight against climate change, in conserving biodiversity, and in ensuring water security. Armenia has embraced the agenda of forest conservation and restoration by committing to double its forest cover by 2050.

  • Speaker of Parliament of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan delivered remarks at the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), touching upon the judicial reforms in Armenia, the Parliament told Armenpress.
  • Foreign Minister of the Republic of Artsakh Masis Mayilian met in Yerevan with President of the Regional Council of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes of the French Republic Laurent Wauquiez said on Artsakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs official page. Masis Mayilian presented the foreign policy priorities of Artsakh, in particular, touched upon the establishment of cooperation with the administrative units of foreign states, noting its importance in terms of unimpeded realization of the fundamental rights of the citizens of Artsakh, effective activity of Artsakh communities and involvement of the Republic in international processes.

 

23 October 

  • Artsakh Republic President Bako Sahakyan on October 23 met with President of the Board of Trustees of the Armenian Assembly of America (AAA) Carolyn Mugar, co-chair Anthony Barsamian and regional director Arpi Vartanian, the Presidential Office told Armenpress. The President underscored that the Armenian Assembly of America is an important link in strengthening the Motherland-Diaspora ties, noting with satisfaction that Artsakh has always occupied a special place in the activity of the organization.

 

22 October

  • President Armen Sarkissian and his spouse Mrs. Nouneh Sarkissian at the invitation of the Japanese government were present in Tokyo at the festive events dedicated to the accession to the throne of Emperor Naruhito. At the ceremony, which took place at the imperial palace of Japan, present were guests from 183 countries, including royal families, leaders of states and governments, dignitaries, heads of international organizations. Prime Minister of Japan Shinzō Abe made a congratulatory address on the occasion of Emperor’s enthronement. In the traditional Japan the Emperor is endowed mainly with ceremonial authorities, the Presidential Office updated.
  • The Croatian parliament on Friday ratified the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the European Union and Armenia. The document received a unanimous support by all the 115 legislators attending the session (4 in absentia), tert.am said, referring to Anna Naghdalyan, the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson’s Facebook post.
  • In accordance with the arrangement reached with the authorities of the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic), the OSCE Mission on Tuesday will carry out a planned monitoring of the ceasefire regime on the border of Artsakh and Azerbaijan, to the southeast of Akna. From the positions of the Defense Army of the Republic of Artsakh, the monitoring will be conducted by Ghenadie Petrica (Moldova) and Mihail Olaru (Moldova), field assistants to the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, the Artsakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed NEWS.am.

  • Mayor Hayk Marutyan visited the administrative district of Erebuni and joined the residents celebrating Yerevan’s day. This year the festive events are decentralized and are held in all administrative districts of the capital. The main events of “Erebuni-Yerevan-2801” start at 19:00 and last till 22:00. The concerts of various music styles are to be held on stages located in various places. The students of community sport and cultural centers are participating in the festival too. The festive events will be finished with bright fireworks fired simultaneously in all administrative districts at 22:00, said Yerevan Municipality official site.
  • The surprise deal to suspend Turkey’s military offensive against Kurdish-led forces in Syria hinged on President Tayyip Erdogan’s demand that Washington agree a time limit on any ceasefire, a senior Turkish official said on Friday, Reutersreported.
  • The fourth annual Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity was awarded today to Mirza Dinnayi, Co-Founder and Director of Luftbrücke Irak (Air Bridge Iraq). Driven by his passion to save lives, the Yazidi activist has found a way to overcome numerous bureaucratic and logistic obstacles to help the most vulnerable members of the Yazidi community during numerous conflicts in Syria and Iraq. He was named the 2019 Aurora Laureate at the Ceremony in Yerevan that was held during the Aurora Forum. The Aurora Prize is granted by the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative on behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors, the IDeA Foundation told Armenpress.
  • President Armen Sarkissian participated today at the meeting of the Aurora Award selection commission which was attended by the co-founders of the Aurora humanitarian initiative Vartan Gregorian, Noubar Afeyan, and Rouben Vardanian, said the Presidential Office. The President hailed their activities and noted that Aurora from an award has become a humanitarian movement. “I greatly appreciate everything you have done for Armenia and the world,” President Sarkissian underscored and thanked the authors of this initiative.
